Officially longest post on this forum! :P

So yes android/java VM machine is doing something, I'm not sure exactly what with the network connection.  I need to look into it to try to understand how I could improve radio usage on the phone.  I definitively agree that constant radio usage does drain the battery.  I did however see a Google IO 2012 video, I believe, about the radio going to standby after a few seconds of usage.  If that's the case then it might be really hard to apply larger packets reads optimization idea.  I'll have to find that video to see what they are saying about the radio...
Thanks Paul for taking the time to write us about this! Well, I have tried multiple things to try to save on battery usage and definitively your assumption is on track.  I know I have previously tried a similar solution to what you have described but had brought some issues on some devices with buffering happening a lot.  However I am intrigued to try again.  I'll set it as planned.  By the way most of the stations on SHOUTcast are all TCP connections.
Great feedback! I'm pleased to let you know we already have a few of your requested options already completed and in the works... Please take a look at XiiaLive Beta from the Google Play Market.  We have added info about where the song played and also allows you to search for the song on youtube or a station that is playing it. Let me know what you think!

Thanks for the info. Some devices the EQ initialization is crashing and that is why no bands are shown... The EQ we are using is provided by Android... :/ Try restarting your device to see if it works...? We will continue to investigate if we can resolve this issue.
Thanks Sergio! Could you let me know the error you see when it fails? Might be worth reproducing the issue and right away collecting the logs. Thanks!
Thanks for the detailed request. The latest release of XiiaLive Beta has the wifi lock issue resolved. We are getting ready for official release on both XiiaLive and XiiaLive Lite.
Could you provide us with a little more information what exactly is not working? Please provide the device you are using. Thanks! :)
