Weird electronic stuttering sound

Dwayne Wilson 10 years ago updated by Onno B 10 years ago 25

Hi, I have the newest version of XiiaLive on Android KitKat 4.4 on my Nexus 7. When I have XiiLive running, and I change to another program, screen or even just open a folder it makes this weird electronic stuttering sound. not the music stuttering, but a sound over everything. it is just momentarily there, but it happens each and every time i do anything on my nexus while the music is playing. Do I have something set up wrong? Help... I love XiiaLive BTW and have been a user for years now. Thanks for a great product.

Hey guys, unfortunately after some research around the web I was able to discover that the Nexus 7 has some nasty audio bugs. It also seems like Nexus 10 might be included in this. Hope you guys get a new Android update that resolves this. If you find out any new information about this issue please let us know.

Sorry, sometimes I can't get to all posts quickly. I'm the developer and support person. :/

Thanks for your feedback. It almost sounds like the device CPU usage is overloaded?? XiiaLive uses very little CPU 3%-8%. Could you have other apps running in the background? It could also be a device hardware defect.

Please try using the FFmpeg stream engine just to check if potentially it is an issue with hardware or the Android OS. To change to FFmpeg go to XiiaLive->Settings->Stream and change the stream engine
hmm possibly? i bought the new nexus 7 (2013) and it has only done it once since then - i'll try changing the stream as well. thanks for the reply! didn't know you were a one man show, the app sure doesnt show it!!
Yes, XiiaLive is one man and a half show.... half cause the designer once in a while has time to put more details to the app while I'm all out working on Xiia under the hood. :) Thanks :)
I'm getting this too on my Nexus 7
I tried the FFmpoeg option and still get Darth Vader effect. Now problem went away suddenly. I don't know . . . ?
Thanks for the update. Just in case... please note that when you switch the FFmpeg you must restart playback in order to get it to switch to the stream engine. Other then that I would say switch back to Android stream engine and see if the issue returns... If it does make sure the equalizer and any audio fxs are OFF.
I am also getting the weird electronic stuttering sound here on my old (2012) Nexus 7 with Android 4.4.2 running. I have no other app running and no problem using the device otherwise. Changing the stream to ffmpeg doesn't change anything about the stuttering. I tried it with stopping the stream and really killing and restarting the app. Still the stuttering occurres. The stuttering seems to come with almost all actions like changing activities in any app or typing. But not while scrolling in the amdroid twitter app. I can not here music through XiiaaLive and do something with the device at same time. I notice that the stuttering only happens if the sound is output via Bluetooth.
Sorry for the delayed reply to your post... :/ Did you update to the latest XiiaLive v3.2.0.5? This really has a new stream engine and we have optimized it big time. Everything is different under the hood and would be interesting to know if the issue still happens.
I know this is a few months old but I just want to add that I am getting this as well on my Nexus 7 (2012) when output is through Bluetooth. :)
Please let me know what version of XiiaLive you are using. Latest release should work fine. Also, please explain when it happens or if it is constantly happening?

Does anyone still have issues with the latest release v3.2.0.5? The app streaming engine has been completely redone and hopefully no longer produces issues.
I just updated to have the version 3.2.0.5.The issue is still there :-(
I tried the stream settings “Android“ and “ffmpeg“ again. Restarted the app. Nothing helps.

It is not fixed and i have no problem with every other sound playing app like spotify or google music. So your app is the only one with that problem, which means that there is something you could do to fix this. I really like your app and i would like to use it. But unfortunately this bug makes it impossible.
I read the links, that's good to know about bugs.

All I can add is that I'm actually having no problems when playing via the internal speaker, it's only when I am using Bluetooth (in my vehicle) that I get the weird stuttering sound.
Just an idea... Turn off completely all notification sound fxs located under XiiaLive settings/sound. See if that helps?
Thanks for the advice, but that doesn't help either.

Working much better since Xiaa update, on Nexus 7. No skipping or strange sounding audio delays now while listening to streams and reading mail or web browsing concurrently. Thanks for fixing!

Thanks Jona for the thing about this being a Nexus 7 problem. I did some digging and one fix that's worked for some is to turn off both touch and screen lock sounds in Settings (Android settings, not Xiialive).

I tried this and it did work for me so I'm happy. :)
This helps me with a part of the problem: the stuttering sound that happens when i change the app etc.But if i type with the android keyboard the stuttering still occures.
Try this: go into the setting for the keyboard and turn off touch sounds (or whatever your particular keyboard calls it). I'm guessing this is separate from the Android settings.
That worked perfectly! I should have thought of it myself after your first post/solution.

So thank you veeeeery much for this workaround!
